Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Cambridge just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can inhibit a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have accumulated through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, placing a cover over your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Cambridge will more than likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At Pliescott HVAC Services LLC in Cambridge, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
