How Can I Improve My Indoor Air Quality?

February 11, 2016

The EPA has discovered that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than the air in larger cities. Indoor air is also more stale. While we’d all like to be able to open the windows and let in some fresh air, that’s not always realistic, especially this winter. There are a few simple things you can do to improve your indoor air quality and create a healthier home environment.

Keep Your Home Clean

A vacuum with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) filter, strong suction and rotating brushes is a great investment in the air quality of your home. Vacuuming once a week with a HEPA-certified vacuum should lessen the dust and allergens collected in your carpets and upholstered furniture.

There are some particles that escape your vacuum no matter how clean you keep your home. If you or someone in your home has allergies, a PureAir™ Air Purification System may be just what you need. This system is a whole-home solution that takes care of particles and odors, and eliminates chemical vapors – all things that may severely affect respiratory concerns.

Air Purifying Plants

Plants are a natural way to purify your air and all plants absorb carbon dioxide and discharge oxygen. In addition, there are some plants that have been found to also eliminate harmful toxins such as: benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.

If you want to add an air purifying plant to your home, you can find a list of those plants by checking out the NASA Clean Air Study. If you have pets, you’ll want to check and be sure any plants you’re introducing into your home are not harmful to them if they decide to give them a taste test.

Keep Your Home Ventilated

Modern homes are designed to keep outdoor air out of your home in order to keep its energy efficiency. This decreased ventilation means a build up of air pollutants indoors. While it’s easy to just crack a window, that may not be enough, which is why we have a few different ventilation solutions to help improve your indoor air quality and keep your home’s air clean and fresh.
